Michael Thonet moved and built his factory in 1861 in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, drawn to this place by the town’s surrounding beech forests and its logistically advantageous position. Throughout the years the factory has been through several name and ownership changes, but what has not changed in 160 years is the unique atmosphere and the singular, artisanal approach to the craft.
The story of your TON chair begins months before you are seated: each product is the work of at least twenty pairs of hands. They are the hands of the cratfsmen and cratfswomen who for six generations have been endowing steamed wood with new shapes and forms; creating a product that is both strong and beautiful.
