Prendendo il nome dal mitico Titano condannato a reggere la volta celeste sulle proprie spalle, le gambe massicce del tavolo Atlas si ergono con forza a sostegno dell'ampio piano. L'incontro e il contrasto tra le gambe e il top sono il fulcro del design: ogni elemento esaspera l'altro, conferendo al tavolo una presenza distinta e un'estetica brutalista.
Per la collezione Atlas, John Astbury ha tratto ispirazione da diverse influenze della storia dell'architettura. Vi sono richiami a porticati e colonnati, ma Atlas si rifà principalmente all'archetipo del sistema trilitico (post-and-lintel). Insieme a geometrie semplici come il cerchio e il quadrato, sono proprio questi archetipi primari a definire il carattere e la composizione del tavolo.
